FBS West Midlands Winter Meeting

Saturday 2nd February 2019 saw fifteen members brave arctic temperatures for a day visiting predominately non-local authority locations around the Staffordshire / Shropshire border.

Having assembled at the aborted 'regional' fire control, near Wolverhampton, the group's first location was the brand new and state of the art security and emergency operations centre at Jaguar Land Rover's Engine Manufacturing Plant, next to the M54, and their equally impressive fleet of vehicles.

It was then onto Wolverhampton Halfpenny Green Airport to see their new Isuzu TACR3 and airfield operations vehicle, before we were then treated to a very interesting presentation from West Mercia Search and Rescue at their base near Bridgnorth.

This was followed by Shropshire Fire and Rescue at Bridgnorth and their Scania pump which The Society had not viewed previously, before culminating the visit at Bridgnorth Aluminium where we were able to see both the 'new' Dennis Sabre, ex-Essex, and the ex-Shropshire Volvo which the Dennis is replacing.

The opportunity was also taken to count the ballot  for the 2017/18 Society Accounts and 2019/20 Operational Plan, as well as launching the new FBS West Midlands Newsletter.

We extend our grateful thanks to all those involved behind the scenes helping to organise the visit and those who looked after us on the day. A full report on the day's activities is being prepared for use in a future edition of Fire Cover.

FBS Scotland Visit

A change of date recently saw 15 members from FBS Scotland, joined by a member from FBS Yorkshire & The Humber, visit the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service West SDA area.

Members visited; Cumbernaul; Easterhouse; Clydesmill; Polmade; Springburn; Cowcaddens and Maryhill. Despite some initial grey skies the weather did improve in the afternoon and with the assistance of the crews some great photographs were obtained by the members present. A varying selection of appliances and bodywork was seen and it was good to see more than just battenburg Scania pumps.

Thanks are expressed to D.A.C.O Heath for allowing the visit and to the members who attended and saw so many vehicles.

Hereford and Worcester Visit 07th July 2018

Many thanks to the cohort of members, from a variety of FBS Regions, who descended on the City of Worcester's new, well equipped station before heading out into the delightful surrounding countryside.
Next was a private collection of preserved airport crash tenders, along with a ubiquitous Green Goddess. These were followed by the fire stations at Pershore, the new fire station at Evesham and then Stourport, Bewdley and Kidderminster before culminating with the NFS / AFS Group and their period appliances.
We extend our grateful appreciation to Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, along with everyone we met on the day.
A full report will appear in a future Fire Cover.

Ebay Find Sparks Fire Station Aniversary Celebrations
The chance discovery of an old document on ebay has sparked 65th anniversary celebrations for a Shropshire fire station.
A member of The Fire Brigade Society had found the original programme for the opening of Wellington Fire Station in 1953 on the internet auction site.
